How Microsoft does IT

  • Maintaining High Availability for Microsoft.com Managing a Web infrastructure is not an easy task. Learn how Microsoft IT maintains one of the highest availability in the industry while supporting 300 million/month unique users, 200 million daily page views, and an average of 555,000 connections to a total of 112 Web servers.
  • Windows 7 & Windows Server 2008 R2 for a Better End User Experience for Managing Distribution, Data and Remote Scenarios Learn how both end users and Microsoft IT realized new efficiency gains through the combination of Windows 7, User State Migration Tool (USMT), SCCM and Windows Server 2008 R2 capabilities like BranchCache, Direct Access, Windows Deployment Services and Hyper-V. Efficiency gains included faster install experience, data migration, simplified remote access, improved bandwidth utilization and security compliance.

Windows Desktop and Server – 7 / 2008 / Vista / 2003 / XP

  • Using KMS in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 deployments One of the more common questions that we are hearing about volume activation today is around how to update your existing Key Management Service (KMS) to support Windows 7 and/or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Live Migration – “The devil may be in the networking details.” Windows Server 2008 R2 has been publicly available now for only a short period of time, but we are already seeing a good adoption rate for the new Live Migration functionality as well as the new Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) feature. I personally have worked enough issues now where Live Migration is failing that I felt a short blog on what process I have followed to work through these may have some value.
  • Windows 7: Windows 7 Useful Links Here is a list of useful links when it comes to Deployment (MDT 2010 and SCCM), USMT 4.0, Activation, Application Compatibility, and Boot to VHD on several Microsoft related websites. These links can change from time to time, but are a good start for getting your environment ready for Windows 7 or other deployments.
  • Flexera Software Webinar Now Available Online: Best Practices for Windows 7 Application Compatibility A couple of weeks ago, I had a chance to sit in on a webinar delivered by Flexera Software and chat about Windows 7 Application Compatibility. The recording of the webinar is now online and available here
  • Internet Explorer:
  • Networking: How to query the list of network interfaces using SNMP (via the ifDescr counter) There have been some instances where customers have asked about how to find out what what network interfaces a machine has by using SNMP. The main reason they want to use SNMP is to achieve the requirement of creating an inventory report and for monitoring remote network devices including Windows systems, routers, and switches with an SNMP Manager (like Microsoft Operations Manager 2005).
  • Directory Services: Troubleshooting Credential Roaming To review, credential roaming makes it possible to roam the user’s credentials in a manageable, secure manner that is ultimately transparent to the user. What follows is a deeper dive into the inner workings of Credential Roaming.
  • WDS and DFSR: Love at First Sync If you dig into the WDS documentation you will find that DFSR and DFSN are recommended for scaling out your deployment servers. You can centralize administration and improve performance by creating multiple distribution points that replicate OS images. All while using components you already paid for when you bought your servers.
  • Cluster: Using Pass-Through Disks in Conjunction with Clustered Shared Volumes (CSV) in Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover Clusters This blog is essentially an update, or follow-up if you will, to the original blog I wrote for Windows Server 2008 Failover Clustering.  With the release of Windows Server 2008 R2 comes the ability to Live Migrate highly available virtual machines between nodes in a Failover Cluster.
  • Dynamic Disks with Windows Server Failover Clustering Since Failover Clustering requires shared storage, we get a lot of questions about which storage types we support.  Windows Server Failover Clustering has a very flexible storage model that allows a wide variety of storage and volume management solutions from 3rd parties to integrate and extend the functionality of clustering.  One common question I commonly get asked is around Dynamic Disk support on Windows Server Failover Clusters, so I thought I would take a moment to address this.
  • Remote Desktop Services: RemoteApp and Desktop Connection Feed Extensibility In our earlier blog post, we introduced RemoteApp and Desktop Connections to enable users to have their RemoteApp and Desktop icons integrated on their Windows 7 start menu.  RemoteApp and Desktop Connections works with this new feature of Remote Desktop Web Access (RD Web Access)–the RemoteApp and Desktop Connection feed. This RemoteApp and Desktop Connection feed provides significant extensibility to partners and customers in presenting remote resources in various ways.
  • RemoteApp for Hyper-V We want to talk about a little known feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 that could be described as RemoteApp for Hyper-V. Like Microsoft RemoteApp, it allows users to access a specific hosted application remotely, as opposed to the entire desktop. With RemoteApp, the application runs in the context of a server session; however, RemoteApp for Hyper-V enables remote access to an application running in a Hyper-V VM.

Exchange Server

  • ISA 2006 SP1 Configuration with Exchange 2010 This article will discuss how to configure ISA 2006 SP1 as part of your deployment of Exchange 2010 in your existing Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2007 environments so that you may successfully allow your clients to connect to both Exchange versions.
  • Moderation with transport rules Let’s say you have a business process that requires the approval of two different people. Well, with moderation and transport rules, you can automate that process with Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010.
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server fully supported on Exchange 2010 This is the earliest customers have been able to deploy BlackBerry smartphones with a new Exchange release – ever. Customers who rely on BES as an important part of their messaging and collaboration infrastructure have told us that more rapid support for RIM’s solution is critical to them. So we partnered with RIM earlier in the development cycle to ensure organizations moving to the new release experience no user downtime. See the article for the requirements.

Office SharePoint Technologies

  •  Getting started with SharePoint 2010 In this blog post, I’d like to share an excerpt from Getting started with SharePoint Server 2010, an article written for an end user who is new to SharePoint 2010 and hasn’t used a previous version of SharePoint.
  • SharePoint Designer 2010 Overview SharePoint Designer can be hard to wrap your arms around, so let’s break it down into some key components and features that blog talked about (By no means is this a complete list for SharePoint Designer 2010).
  • How to set Replication Directory Changes In November, we posted guidance to help setup User Profile Synchronization for those evaluating SharePoint 2010 public beta.  In order for the sync to work, the SharePoint WFE farm admin account or UPA admin account must have “Replicated Directory Changes” permissions in Active Directory.  To help the SharePoint admins that are not Active Directory admins, here is a step-by-step walk-thru to complete this task on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Microsoft Office System

  • Volume Activation Tips and Tricks I’m Ted Way, program manager for Office 2010 volume activation. Last time I posted to this blog, I talked about KMS and MAK as two activation methods for the enterprise. If you’re planning on deploying Office 2010, Windows (7, Vista, Server 2008 R2, Server 2008), or a combination of these, you’ll be happy to know that the activation technologies are essentially the same. The same KMS host running on Windows Server 2008 R2, volume editions of Windows 7, or Windows Server 2003 can activate both Windows and Office, for example.
  • Office 2010 File Validation I’m David B Heise and I work on the Office Security team responsible for testing Office File Validation (codename: Gatekeeper). There have been some misconceptions about the new file validation feature in Microsoft Office 2010 and I hope to clear these up and explain the why and what.
  • Digital Signatures in Office 2010 I’d like to introduce some new features we have added to digital signatures in Office 2010. First I’ll briefly explain what digital signatures are and how to use them, and then I’ll dive into the details about how they work in Office 2010.
  • Access: Access 15 and SQL Server As Office 2010 nears shipping, we are starting to plan Office 15.  One area that we are considering improving is our SQL Server support. We need your help to understand the need for improvements and make the case for improved SQL support. If you could take a few moments, please jot down your thoughts on the questions in the blog post – and send mail using the link.
  • OCS: Office Communications Server Remote Connectivity Analyzer Have you ever installed an Office Communication Server and wanted to verify your remote access was setup and configured properly? Or what if you get a call or an escalation regarding a service or connection not working? How do you verify whether the issue is with an individual user or with everyone throughout the company?
  • Excel:  Introducing the JavaScript Object Model for Excel Services in SharePoint 2010 The JavaScript Object Model (JSOM) enables a whole new set of solutions using Excel Services. With the JSOM it is possible to detect and react to a user’s interactions with an Excel Web Access (EWA) web part and to programmatically interact with one or multiple EWA web parts.
